The Ondo State Police Command has opened an investigation into a viral video showing a police officer allegedly threatening to slap and detain a traveller during an encounter at a checkpoint in the state.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media on Friday, captured the officer allegedly telling a motorist that he would have arrested and detained him if he were Igbo.
The incident reportedly involved a Nigerian who had recently returned from the United Kingdom and was stopped by police officers at a checkpoint over allegations of attempted extortion.
Reacting to the video, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the Command viewed the incident with utmost seriousness.
According to him, the Command “does not condone any form of unprofessional conduct by its personnel in the discharge of their duties and has therefore commenced a thorough investigation into the incident.”
Jimoh also appealed to the traveller featured in the video to contact the Command and “provide further details that will aid the investigation and ensure appropriate redress.”
