Academic activities at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), have been disrupted following the commencement of an indefinite strike by the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The union took the decision on Monday after an emergency meeting, citing outstanding financial obligations to its members estimated at more than N3 billion.
The chapter chairman, Dr. Zubairu Loko, said the industrial action was also in compliance with resolutions reached at the union’s National Executive Council meeting held in July.
According to him, the unpaid entitlements cover Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), arrears arising from the implementation of the new national minimum wage and the salary increase approved by the Federal Government for university lecturers.
Loko expressed disappointment with the university management and the Nasarawa State Government, accusing them of failing to adequately address the financial concerns of academic staff despite repeated engagements.
He said the union had met with the university authorities, the Governing Council and representatives of the state government on several occasions in an effort to resolve the matter, but no lasting solution had been reached.
The chairman declared that lecturers had withdrawn their services until the outstanding payments were settled.
He added that academic staff would not resume teaching, supervision or research activities until their entitlements were fully paid.
The strike has already affected academic activities across the university, with lecture halls reportedly shut and students unable to proceed with scheduled lectures.
