The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has suspended a Deputy Superintendent of Corps, Onoja Babayo Samuel, following his alleged involvement in a shooting incident at Kubwa Market in Abuja.

The incident occurred on October 25, 2026, during a confrontation between the officer and some traders, prompting the Federal Capital Territory Police Command to arrest him.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the NSCDC National Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi, said the corps had also initiated an Orderly Room Trial to establish the officer’s level of responsibility in the incident.

The statement quoted the Commandant-General of the corps, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, as ordering Samuel’s immediate suspension and the commencement of disciplinary proceedings.

Audi, according to the statement, maintained that the corps would not tolerate the misuse of firearms or any form of professional misconduct by its personnel.

The NSCDC said the suspended officer had been relieved of his duties and official assignment pending the conclusion of the investigation and disciplinary process.

It added that a committee at the corps’ national headquarters in Abuja would handle the case, while the outcome of the proceedings would be made public after their conclusion.

The corps reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, upholding professional standards and ensuring accountability, stressing that no personnel would be shielded from disciplinary action for conduct that threatens public safety or breaches operational guidelines.

Earlier, the FCT Police Command confirmed Samuel’s arrest following a distress call reporting that an armed individual was firing shots into the air at Kubwa Market.

The police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the officer had reportedly gone to the market with a pistol after receiving information that some traders had assaulted his wife.

Police operatives from the Kubwa Division subsequently responded to the scene, disarmed the officer and took him into custody.
