The Nigeria Police Force has warned Amotekun and other non-state security groups against participating in security operations during the Osun State Governorship Election.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, August 14, 2026, ahead of Saturday’s election.
According to the statement, only security agencies established and recognised by the Constitution and laws of Nigeria are authorised to carry out security and law-enforcement duties in connection with the election.
The police said no vigilante organisation, non-state security group or other unauthorised body would be permitted to assume the responsibilities of recognised security agencies.
The Force therefore directed such groups to stay away from election security operations and refrain from activities capable of intimidating voters, disrupting the electoral process or threatening public peace.
The police also announced a restriction of movement across Osun State as part of measures to ensure a peaceful and orderly election.
The restriction will take effect from 12:00 midnight on Friday, August 14, until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
Members of the public were urged to comply with the directive and cooperate with security personnel deployed across the state. Only persons and categories of movement specifically exempted by the relevant authorities will be permitted during the period.
Political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders were equally urged to maintain peace, exercise restraint and avoid actions that could lead to violence or interfere with the electoral process.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security and ensuring a peaceful environment and level playing field for all eligible voters and political actors.
It also called on residents to remain calm and law-abiding while reporting suspicious or unlawful activities to constitutionally recognised security agencies.
