The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, has died at the age of 59.

Wushishi reportedly passed away on Friday, August 28, 2026, after a brief illness, with news of his death reaching Minna, the Niger State capital, around the time of the Juma’at prayer.

His death has sparked mourning among his family, associates, political colleagues and stakeholders across Niger State and beyond.

The development was confirmed by his Special Adviser on Media, Stanley Nwosu, who told Vanguard that the NPC chairman died following a brief illness.
“Yes, it is true. The NPC chairman died after a brief illness,” Nwosu said.

Wushishi was a former Secretary of the Niger State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party and had held several public service positions before his appointment as chairman of the National Population Commission.

Meanwhile, the Digital Rector of Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru, Amb. Ibrahim Umar Kontagora, has expressed grief over Wushishi’s death, describing it as a major loss to the Kontagora Emirate, Niger State and Nigeria.

In a condolence message, Kontagora extended his sympathies to the people of Kontagora Emirate and the deceased’s family.

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that the Digital Rector, Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru, Amb Ibrahim Umar Kontagora PhD extends his deepest condolences to the entire good people of Kontagora Emirate over the painful loss of Alhaji Aminu Yusuf Talba Wushishi, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC),” he said.

He described Wushishi as a distinguished public figure whose contributions to society would remain part of his enduring legacy.

“His passing is a great loss not only to his immediate family and loved ones, but also to the people of Kontagora Emirate, Niger State, and Nigeria at large,” Kontagora added.
According to him, Wushishi’s years of service and contributions to humanity would continue to be remembered.

“He was a distinguished personality whose contributions and service to humanity will remain a lasting part of his legacy,” he said.

Kontagora also prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul and strength for those affected by his passing.

“At this difficult moment, we pray that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, accepts his good deeds, grants him Aljannatul Firdaus, and gives his family, colleagues, friends, and the entire Kontagora Emirate the strength and patience to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.

He further prayed, “May Allah grant us all a good ending and make our final destination Jannatul Firdaus.”
He concluded with, “Amin Ya Rabbal Alamin.”

Wushishi assumed office as Chairman of the National Population Commission on December 2, 2025, succeeding Nasir Isa Kwarra.

Before his appointment, he built a career spanning public service and political administration and was recognised for his academic and professional background.

Details of his death, including funeral arrangements, were still being awaited as of the time of filing this report.
