A Nigerian man, Daniel Olowookere, has been sentenced to six years’ imprisonment in the United Kingdom after admitting to raping two girls, both below the age of 12.
Olowookere, who resides in Blackley, appeared before Manchester Crown Court, where he initially denied the charges before later changing his plea to guilty, according to a report shared on X on Tuesday by Nigerian Community UK.
Witnesses at the sentencing reportedly described him as showing no remorse, alleging that he shook his head as the judge pronounced the prison term.
During the proceedings, Olowookere’s defence team reportedly presented his Nigerian cultural background as a mitigating factor in seeking a reduced sentence.
However, the presiding judge stressed that no cultural background could justify the sexual abuse of children.
Meanwhile, investigators have expressed concerns that there could be other victims and have urged anyone with relevant information to contact the authorities.
