The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has clarified that applying for student loans is voluntary, advising students in tertiary institutions to seek financial assistance through the scheme only when they genuinely need it.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday and signed by NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi.
The Fund explained that the loan scheme was designed to ease financial challenges associated with pursuing higher education and ensure that eligible Nigerian students are not denied access to educational opportunities because of financial difficulties.
NELFUND emphasised that students who can independently meet their educational expenses are not required to apply for or access the loan facility.
It added that the initiative is intended to support students facing financial constraints, rather than impose an obligation on every student to borrow money to fund their education.
