The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended the deadline for stakeholders to submit memoranda and position papers on the proposed legislation.
The new deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026, giving individuals, organisations and institutions additional time to study the proposed law and make detailed contributions.
Chairman of the Working Group, Femi Gbajabiamila, announced the extension in a statement, stressing the importance of broad consultation in shaping a policing framework that reflects Nigeria’s security realities.
He said the proposed National Policing Bill is designed to establish the operational, administrative, institutional and funding structures required for an effective policing system, while strengthening professionalism, accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights.
Gbajabiamila, who is also the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, said the significance of the proposed reforms made it necessary to give stakeholders more time to provide meaningful and technically sound input.
He urged legal practitioners, civil society groups, security professionals, state governments, academics, professional associations and other interested Nigerians to use the additional period to submit their views.
According to him, all memoranda and position papers must be submitted through the official National Policing Bill portal, nationalpolicingbill.com, before the new deadline.
The Working Group identified sustainable funding, command and control, recruitment and training, operational jurisdiction, inter-agency cooperation, accountability and protection against political interference as some of the key issues requiring careful consideration.
Gbajabiamila said extensive stakeholder engagement would help produce a policing framework that is effective, sustainable, accountable and responsive to the security needs of communities across the country.
He also thanked stakeholders who had already submitted their contributions, assuring that the Working Group would use the outcome of the consultation to prepare a final, implementation-ready draft for legislative consideration.
