The incident occurred on Monday, August 17, 2026, in Bin Mper village, Kombun District, Mangu Local Government Area of the state.
The account was shared by Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, a senior cleric of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), who described Kyerna’s actions as an extraordinary demonstration of a mother’s courage and sacrifice.
According to Dachomo, armed men invaded the community and broke into Kyerna’s home while she and her five children were asleep.
He alleged that Kyerna’s husband, Jonathan Ishaku, who was outside keeping watch, fled into a nearby cornfield after realising he could not defend his family against the attackers.
The cleric said the assailants forced their way into the house and opened fire, killing three of Kyerna’s children.
As the gunmen continued shooting, Kyerna reportedly threw herself over her two youngest children, covering them with her body in an attempt to protect them from the bullets.
Dachomo said Kyerna was struck several times in the back during the attack and was left critically injured at the scene.
When rescuers arrived, they reportedly found her bleeding heavily. However, the two children she had shielded were said to have escaped unharmed.
Her three other children were killed in the attack and were among 25 victims reportedly buried the following morning in Bin Mper village.
Kyerna was subsequently taken to a hospital, where she is receiving treatment for the injuries she sustained.
Dachomo described her survival as the story of a mother who took bullets meant for her children and lived to recount the ordeal.
