The incident reportedly occurred when the couple visited the home of a family acquaintance in an attempt to resolve lingering disagreements in their marriage.
According to family sources, what began as an effort to mediate the dispute allegedly turned violent after an argument broke out between the couple.
The husband is said to have attacked his wife with a machete, leaving her with multiple serious injuries.
The woman reportedly died from the injuries sustained in the attack, while her husband allegedly fled the scene shortly afterwards. Her remains were subsequently taken away from the location.
A relative of the deceased, identified as her cousin, alleged that she had been considering leaving the marriage after becoming concerned over the disappearance of some of her clothes and underwear from their home.
The cousin said the deceased had planned to leave Ado-Ekiti for her sister’s residence on Thursday, September 10, although she reportedly told her husband that she was travelling to her sister’s place for work.
He further alleged that on Wednesday morning, September 9, the woman was invited to the residence of her late father’s friend by the man’s wife, who reportedly told her that her husband wanted to see her.
According to the relative, the woman went to the residence without knowing that her husband would be present. He alleged that the meeting, which was intended to settle their marital differences, eventually escalated into a violent confrontation that ended in her death.
The family member also alleged that the suspect escaped with the deceased’s mobile phone, which the family believes may contain information relevant to the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts to locate and arrest the suspect, stressing that the family was seeking justice for the deceased.
“We want him to be found and arrested. We want justice for our daughter. Her parents are in pain, and my family is in serious agony. She didn’t deserve this,” he said.
The relative further claimed that some individuals had been taken into police custody in connection with the incident, while the whereabouts of the main suspect remained unknown.
The Ekiti State Police Command had not officially confirmed the incident as of the time of filing this report.
