The Onigbesi of Igbesi Land in Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Moses Oyinloye Iwedunmoye I, has died days after he was released by his abductors.
The traditional ruler was reportedly taken hostage on August 22, 2026, when armed men invaded Igbesi community in Oke-Onigbin, forcing their way into the area late at night.
He regained his freedom five days later, on August 27, following a security operation around the Elerin/Ijomu-Oro axis of the state.
The monarch’s death was announced on Saturday by the National President of Omo Ibile Igbomina, Bisi Fakayode, who expressed grief over the loss and prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul.
A son of the late monarch, Prince Olasunkanmi, also confirmed the development, disclosing that his father died at a hospital in the early hours of Saturday.
According to him, the monarch developed an illness shortly after his release and was taken to a hospital for treatment but could not survive.
The traditional ruler’s death came just days after his release from captivity, following the August 22 attack on Igbesi community.
The community, located within Oke-Onigbin in Isin Local Government Area and in Kwara South Senatorial District, had come under attack when the armed men reportedly invaded at about 11pm.
The abduction formed part of a series of kidnapping incidents and other security challenges recorded in different parts of Kwara State.
