The Kano State House of Assembly has approved the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing new measures aimed at improving the regulation and administration of privately owned educational institutions across the state.
The bill received the Assembly’s approval during Monday’s plenary after lawmakers adopted the report of the House Committee on Education, which reviewed the proposed legislation following consultations and public hearings with key stakeholders.
Addressing members after the bill was passed, Speaker Ismail Falgore praised lawmakers for their commitment throughout the legislative process, saying the amendment would enhance the effective management and supervision of private and voluntary schools in Kano State.
One of the key provisions of the amended law is the establishment of the office of the Executive Secretary to oversee the day-to-day administration of the board and improve its operational efficiency.
The legislation also makes it mandatory for private and voluntary educational institutions to secure official approval before implementing any increase in tuition or other school charges.
According to the Assembly, the new requirement is intended to protect parents and guardians from unjustified fee increases while ensuring that adjustments to school fees are subject to proper regulatory scrutiny.
The amendment followed a comprehensive review process led by the House Committee on Education, which engaged education stakeholders before presenting its final recommendations for legislative approval.
