Hunter Biden has opened up about his father Joe Biden’s health, revealing that the former United States president is facing increasingly difficult days as he undergoes treatment for cancer.

Hunter said the illness has spread to his father’s bones, describing the condition as painful and debilitating for the family to witness.

He made the disclosure in an interview published by the BBC on Saturday while speaking about Biden’s ongoing battle with the disease.

“I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good — the cancer has spread,” Hunter said, noting that the cancer had metastasised to his father’s bones “and further”.

“It’s very painful… very debilitating,” he added. “Cancer is really hard. It’s really sad to watch.”

Hunter, Biden’s only surviving son, also spoke warmly about his father’s role within the family, describing him as a central figure in their lives.

“My dad is, to this day, the centre of our family. He’s the best father, the best husband, the best grandfather,” he said.

Biden disclosed his cancer diagnosis in May 2025, about four months after leaving office, revealing that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

At the time, the former president expressed confidence about his treatment and said doctors expected him to respond positively to medication.

“The prognosis is good, we’re working on it,” Biden had said. “It’s all a matter of taking a pill, one particular pill, for the next six weeks. And the expectation is we’re going to be able to beat this.”

More recently, Biden also spoke publicly about his treatment, saying he was responding well and thanking people who had supported him and his family.

“I’m dealing with a cancer diagnosis, been getting treatment, and it’s going really well,” he said last month.

“I want to thank all those who have offered their prayers and support and well-wishes. It’s meant the world to me and to Jill.”

The former president has reportedly spent more time with members of his family in recent months while continuing his treatment.

Questions surrounding Biden’s health had already become prominent during the final stage of his presidency and throughout the 2024 presidential campaign.

Biden ended his re-election bid in July 2024 and was replaced as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate by then-Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris subsequently lost the November election to Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, Biden is also set to release a new memoir, Promise Me, America, which is scheduled for publication in November.
