The appointment was announced on Sunday by the Secretary to the State Government, Bala Ibrahim, at a press briefing held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Dutse, the state capital.
Ibrahim said the governor reached the decision after consultations with the Gumel Emirate Council and kingmakers, in accordance with the Jigawa State Emirate Council Law.
“Following due consultations with the Gumel Emirate Council, kingmakers, and in accordance with the Jigawa State Emirate Council Law, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the new Emir of Gumel,” the SSG said.
He said the appointment took immediate effect to prevent a leadership vacuum and ensure peace, unity and stability across the emirate.
The government described the new monarch as an experienced traditional leader, noting that he previously served as Ciroman Gumel during his late father’s reign.
Ibrahim said his experience, education and familiarity with the customs and affairs of the emirate made him suitable for the position.
The SSG also conveyed Governor Namadi’s appeal to the people of Gumel Emirate to support the new emir and cooperate with him in advancing peace and development.
The governor also prayed for the repose of the late emir and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the traditional institution as a pillar of culture and unity.
Ibrahim disclosed that the
governor would formally present the staff of office to the new Emir of Gumel at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
