IGP OPENS WORKSHOP ON STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION FOR POLICE COMMISSIONERS

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has inaugurated a two-day workshop on strategic communication and media relations for Commissioners of Police from across the country.

The workshop, themed “Enhancing Strategic Communication and Media Relations,” is taking place at the Nigeria Police Public Relations School (NPPRS), Abuja Centre, with members of the Force Management Team, senior police officers and communication experts in attendance.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu.

According to the statement, the Provost of the school, CP Emmanuel Ojukwu (Rtd.), urged participants to apply the knowledge gained by mentoring officers under their commands. He noted that while Police Public Relations Officers manage the image of the Force, the conduct and professionalism of officers on duty ultimately shape public perception.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, IGP Disu commended officers for their commitment to maintaining security across the country. He said the workshop was designed to strengthen the media engagement skills of Commissioners of Police, noting that effective communication has become an essential part of modern policing.

The Inspector-General reminded the CPs that their responsibilities extend beyond law enforcement, urging them to provide visible leadership, engage with communities, and build public trust through regular interactions with citizens.

He also encouraged the commissioners to maintain an active media presence, respond promptly to security issues, and develop strong working relationships with journalists. Describing the media as critical partners in policing, the IGP stressed the need for proactive communication, transparency and professionalism.

The statement added that IGP Disu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to improving the communication capacity of its senior officers as part of efforts to build a more professional, accountable and people-oriented police service.
