The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to intelligence-driven operations, respect for human rights and the use of technology in tackling crime.
Disu stated this on Saturday, October 17, 2026, while attending the launch of Beyond the Bullets: Policing Terrorism in a Democratic System, written by a former Inspector-General of Police, MD Abubakar, at the Police Resource Centre in Abuja.
In his goodwill message, the police chief said effective policing in a democratic society must go beyond the use of force, emphasising the importance of professionalism, adherence to the rule of law and public confidence in law enforcement institutions.
He urged police personnel and members of the public to consider the book a valuable resource for understanding police reforms and the need to uphold democratic principles in the discharge of security responsibilities.
The IGP stressed that efforts to combat terrorism must be conducted within the framework of the Constitution and in accordance with established human rights standards.
He also praised Abubakar for his leadership during a difficult period marked by insurgency and terrorism, noting that his experience demonstrated that decisive action against criminal activities could be pursued without undermining constitutional principles.
According to Disu, the publication offers important lessons for policymakers, security professionals, academics and members of the public, drawing from the retired police chief’s years of operational experience, strategic leadership and service to the country.
He added that the insights contained in the book could guide current and future police leaders in balancing security demands with the responsibilities of policing in a democratic society.
The IGP, on behalf of the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, congratulated Abubakar on the publication and commended his continued contribution to national development.
He also wished the retired police chief good health, longevity and further opportunities to serve the country.
The statement was signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on October 17, 2026.
