White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has announced her decision to leave the Trump administration at the end of August, saying the demands of the job have made it difficult for her to give her two young children the attention they deserve.

President Donald Trump announced her departure on Wednesday and praised the 28-year-old, saying she would continue working with him as a senior adviser outside the administration.

Leavitt described her time as White House press secretary as one of the greatest honours of her life, thanking Trump for giving her the opportunity to serve as the administration’s chief spokesperson.

She returned to the White House briefing room on July 16 after taking maternity leave following the birth of her second child, a daughter, in May.

However, Leavitt said returning to work made her realise that she could not successfully balance the intense demands of the position with motherhood.

She said the role requires constant time, energy and attention, making it difficult for her to be the mother she wants to be to her two children.

Leavitt described her decision to leave the White House as bittersweet, saying she was ready to begin a new chapter in her life.

Despite stepping down, she said Trump had asked her to continue serving as one of his top advisers from outside the administration.

She also pledged to remain a vocal supporter of Trump, the MAGA movement and the Republican Party.

Trump said Leavitt would continue playing a role in Republican efforts ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Leavitt became the youngest person ever to serve as White House press secretary when Trump appointed her at 27. She went on to become one of the administration’s most visible defenders, regularly addressing reporters and promoting the president’s policies.

She said leaving the White House would not end her political involvement, stressing that her political fight was simply entering a new phase.

Leavitt thanked Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, administration officials, colleagues and her staff.

She also expressed special gratitude to her husband and family for the sacrifices they made while she served in the demanding White House position.
