The proposal, known as the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme (NACTP), was presented at the third meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum held on Wednesday in Abuja.
The meeting, chaired by the NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, focused on measures to ease the impact of rising transportation costs on citizens.
Under the proposed programme, state governments would support the conversion of existing vehicles to CNG, provide fleets and develop infrastructure needed to sustain the scheme.
Participating transport operators would also be expected to commit to lower passenger fares, with the ultimate goal of passing the savings from cheaper CNG operations to commuters.
The governors acknowledged the programme’s potential to reduce the financial pressure of transportation on Nigerians but said further discussions were needed on how the initiative would be financed and implemented across the states.
The Forum also received a presentation from the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, on the opportunities available to states through CANEX Weekend 2026 and the Intra-African Trade Fair 2027, both scheduled to hold in Lagos.
The governors said the events could help states attract investors, promote locally produced goods and tourism, while creating opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses to access African and international markets.
Governors at the meeting included Hope Uzodimma of Imo, Babagana Zulum of Borno, Douye Diri of Bayelsa, Bassey Otu of Cross River, Umar Namadi of Jigawa, Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo and Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa.
Deputy governors from Katsina, Yobe, Niger and Oyo states were also represented.
