Four people have died following the collapse of a three-storey building in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Tuesday morning.
The Kwara State Fire Service confirmed that four other victims had been rescued alive from the debris as emergency personnel continued efforts to locate anyone still trapped beneath the rubble.
The Fire Service spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the casualties at about 11:20am while giving an update on the rescue operation.
“Based on the situation report, now we’ve recovered four people dead and rescued four people alive,” Adekunle said.
He added that further information would be released as the operation progresses, noting that rescue teams remained at the scene.
The building collapsed at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, near Gogoro Mosque, in the Ile Oyan Masalasi Gogoro area of Ilorin.
Emergency responders, including firefighters, were joined by local residents in searching through the rubble for trapped victims.
An excavator was brought in to clear the debris and provide access to parts of the structure where additional victims could potentially be trapped.
Earlier reports indicated that several people, including two children, had been pulled out alive from the collapsed building.
Images and videos from the scene showed rescue workers carrying an injured girl away from the debris as the search operation continued.
Authorities have yet to establish the exact number of occupants inside the building when it collapsed.
The cause of the incident has also not been officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
Rescue operations remain ongoing as emergency agencies continue to assess the scene and search for possible survivors.
