The Federal Government has dismissed reports of an impending increase in electricity tariffs, saying there is currently no plan to raise the cost of power for consumers.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, made this known on Monday in Abuja at a media briefing to mark his first 100 days in office, covering the period from June 8 to September 16.
Tegbe said he received several calls over the weekend concerning reports that the government was preparing to review electricity tariffs upwards.
He described the reports as politically motivated, particularly with the 2027 general elections approaching, stressing that the administration’s priority was to improve power supply across the country.
The minister said the government was exploring renewable energy options while also carrying out a comprehensive audit of power infrastructure nationwide.
According to him, the exercise is aimed at identifying major gaps within the sector and developing measures to address them.
Tegbe noted that the electricity industry was facing challenges across its entire value chain, adding that increasing generation alone would not resolve the problems confronting the sector.
His comments come amid ongoing concerns over the financial sustainability of Nigeria’s electricity market and the government’s continued support for the sector.
