The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has transferred several suspects arrested in connection with drug-related offences, alongside recovered illicit substances, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The handover forms part of efforts by security and law enforcement agencies in the FCT to strengthen joint operations against drug trafficking and other criminal activities.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, who supervised the exercise, said the decision was aimed at deepening cooperation between the police and the NDLEA in tackling drug-related crimes.
Sanusi explained that although the police have the legal authority to investigate and prosecute offences involving illicit drugs, the NDLEA has a specific statutory responsibility for drug-related investigations and prosecutions.
He therefore stressed the importance of maintaining close coordination between both agencies to ensure effective handling of such cases.
Following the exercise, the seized substances and the suspects linked to their recovery were formally handed over to the NDLEA FCT Strategic Command.
Receiving them on behalf of the agency, its Public Relations Officer, ACN Samuel Orji, commended the FCT Police Command for supporting inter-agency collaboration.
Orji said the NDLEA would subject the suspects to proper investigation and prosecute those found culpable in line with relevant laws.
The development comes amid increased efforts by law enforcement agencies to dismantle drug networks and disrupt criminal activities within the nation’s capital.
The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to working with the NDLEA and other sister agencies to enhance security and protect residents across the territory.
The command also urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station to assist security agencies in preventing crime.
