The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to shut the runway of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for approximately 25 days to allow for repairs and resurfacing.

The proposed closure is scheduled to commence on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation by the authority.

In a press release dated October 8, 2025, and signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, FAAN said sections of the runway had deteriorated, with potholes and extensive cracks worsened by recent heavy rainfall.

The authority explained that the temporary closure would enable engineers to carry out essential rehabilitation work to improve runway safety and prevent further damage.

The planned intervention will include pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected areas.

FAAN also disclosed that the project would feature an extension of the runway to accommodate wide-body aircraft, as air traffic to the region continues to grow.

According to the authority, the rehabilitation is being scheduled ahead of the anticipated increase in passenger numbers and flight operations during the Christmas festive season.

Passengers intending to travel through the airport during the proposed closure have been advised to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and alternative travel arrangements.

FAAN said it would continue consultations with relevant stakeholders and announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they had been finalised.

The planned shutdown forms part of the authority’s efforts to improve the airport’s runway conditions, strengthen operational safety and expand its capacity to handle increased air traffic
