The Federal Ministry of Education has published the final list of textbooks approved and ranked for use in Nigerian schools between 2026 and 2028.
The ministry made this known in a statement issued on Monday by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, after completing the first phase of the national textbook ranking exercise.
The first phase covers textbooks prescribed for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS1).
According to the ministry, every approved textbook has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code to aid identification, monitoring and accountability.
The new system also contains information such as the title of each book, author or authors, publisher and year of publication.
The exercise was carried out under the supervision of the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, with the final list approved by Alausa.
The ministry said the introduction of the tracking codes was designed to strengthen oversight of approved instructional materials and improve transparency in their selection, procurement and use.
It explained that the process of generating and assigning individual codes to the ranked textbooks contributed to the time taken to finalise and validate the list.
The ministry added that the ranking exercise would be conducted in phases, with the second phase expected to cover textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS2 and SS2.
It noted that the same identification and tracking system would be applied to textbooks approved under the subsequent phase.
The ministry urged publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other relevant stakeholders to consult the approved list when selecting or purchasing textbooks for the affected classes.
It said the exercise was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to ensure that teachers and learners have access to quality, relevant and curriculum-aligned instructional materials.
The ministry further stressed that strict adherence to the approved list would promote transparency and accountability in the provision of textbooks across Nigerian schools.
The complete 2026–2028 list, including the Ranking/QR Tracking Code assigned to each approved textbook, has been made available through the ministry’s designated platform.
