Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year career with the national team.
The 41-year-old forward confirmed his decision on Thursday in a farewell video shared on his Instagram account, where he reflected on his journey and described wearing Portugal’s number seven jersey as a privilege and responsibility.
Ronaldo made 234 appearances for Portugal, scoring 146 goals to establish himself as the highest-scoring international player in men's football history.
In his farewell message, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said the time had come to hand over the iconic number seven shirt to the next generation, describing the decision as difficult but necessary.
His announcement comes amid reports of growing tensions with national team coach Jorge Jesus, following a disagreement last month over his exclusion from a Nations League fixture. Ronaldo subsequently left the team’s camp and received a 30-day suspension.
Although speculation had suggested that he would return to international duty, Thursday’s announcement appears to have ended those expectations.
One of the defining moments of his international career came in 2016 when he helped Portugal secure their first-ever European Championship title in France. However, he was forced off with an injury during the final against the hosts.
Ronaldo also featured at the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, scoring three goals before Portugal were eliminated in the Round of 16 by eventual champions Spain.
