Chelsea have completed the signing of experienced England midfielder Jordan Henderson from Premier League side Brentford F.C. on a two-year contract.
The former Liverpool captain joins the Blues after ending his spell at Brentford, where his contract was terminated following Chelsea’s interest in securing his services.
Speaking after the move was confirmed, Henderson said the opportunity to join Chelsea was one he could not reject.
“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down.
“I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction.
“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
The 36-year-old enjoyed a successful spell at Liverpool F.C., where he captained the team to Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles before leaving for Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq FC in 2023. He later moved to AFC Ajax before returning to England with Brentford last year.
Henderson has earned 91 caps for England and was included in the country’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His tournament, however, was cut short after he suffered a broken arm, limiting his appearances.
The midfielder becomes Chelsea’s latest summer addition under manager Xabi Alonso. His arrival comes just days after the club signed veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion F.C..
Chelsea have also strengthened their squad with the signings of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa F.C. for a British-record fee of £117 million, as well as defenders Maxence Lacroix and Marco Palestra.
The London club finished 10th in the Premier League last season, narrowly behind Brentford, and missed out on qualification for European competitions. Chelsea will begin their new league campaign with an away fixture against Fulham F.C. at Craven Cottage on August 24.
