A 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager, Javits Frimpong, has been killed in a shooting near his school in the Bronx, New York, United States.
Frimpong was reportedly shot in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday around East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont neighbourhood.
According to the New York Police Department, the teenager was rushed to a nearby hospital by emergency responders but was later pronounced dead.
Police have launched a search forthree teenage suspects, believed to be between 16 and 18 years old. The suspects were reportedly dressed in black outfits and wearing blue surgical masks when they fled the scene.
Authorities have yet to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
The victim's father, Thomas Frimpong, told CBS News that his son relocated from Ghana to the United States about a year ago to live with him.
He said he was informed of the incident by the principal of Dreamyard Preparatory, the school his son attended.
Thomas also raised concerns about alleged bullying involving his son, claiming the teenager had repeatedly complained about being harassed by another student.
According to the father, his son had been involved in a fight with two boys days before the shooting, an incident that reportedly resulted in their suspension.
He further disclosed that the teenager later told him that another student regularly bullied him during lunch breaks.
“Any time I am going to lunch, that guy keep on bullying me,” the teenager reportedly told his father.
CBS News said it contacted the school and the New York City Department of Education for comments on the bullying allegations but had not received a response when its report was published.
Describing his son as a quiet child, Thomas said he was devastated by the tragedy.
“My son is very quiet. My son didn’t talk. He don’t talk,” he said.
The grieving father appealed to those responsible for his son's death to turn themselves in, insisting that the killing of an innocent teenager should not go unpunished.
Meanwhile, the NYPD has urged members of the public with useful information about the incident to contact its Crime Stoppers hotline.
