The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has unveiled a list of 10 Nigerian products rejected abroad.
According to Deputy Director of NAFDAC’s Export Division, Ports Inspection Directorate, Mrs. Sanwo-Olu O.A, some of the rejected goods from 2018 till date include sesame, beans, melon seeds, peanut and smoked fish/fish meal, ginger, spices paper, hibiscus flower, palm oil, and ogbono.
Presenting a paper titled: ‘How to Improve Process to Increase Export in Nigeria’, at the CHINET 3rd Aviacargo Conference in Lagos, with the theme: ‘Unlocking the Logistics Barrier to Improve Agro Exports Products’, she said that there are factors that hinder the export of some products from the country, which is why they are rejected.
These factors include non-adherence to standardized clearance procedures by stakeholders, exporting regulated products without recourse to NAFDAC processes, freight forwarders, cargo handlers, airlines/carriers, regulatory agencies, and poor inter-agency collaboration among sister regulatory agencies.
However, she noted that all exported produce that goes through the export certification process is not rejected.
Sanwo-Olu, therefore, called for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that export trade meets the requirements of the country’s trading partner, in terms of certification quality, standards, and quantity to increase the country’s volume of exports.
