A notorious criminal gang known as Marlians has reportedly killed a police officer identified as Babagana Mala in Borno state. The incident occurred on July 23 near the 33 artillery military brigade in Maiduguri, the state capital. Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, reported that the Marlians gang, infamous for attacking citizens and snatching properties, beat the police officer to death.
A video obtained by Zagazola showed about 10 youths surrounding the victim and assaulting him. In the video, one of the suspects seized the officer’s gun while others urged him to shoot the policeman.
The criminals were heard shouting threats and expletives, demonstrating a violent confrontation.
After the incident, some youths intervened and rushed the injured officer to the hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
Following the attack, the police managed to arrest five suspects, including a female seen in the video. However, others involved in the crime managed to escape and are currently at large.
As of now, attempts to reach Borno police spokesperson, Kamiludeen Sani, for an official statement were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages.
The incident has caused concern and raised awareness of the activities of criminal gangs like Marlians, which continue to pose a threat to citizens and security forces in the region.
