Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Tuesday felicitated with Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala for emerging as the 2023 African Players of the Year in the men and women categories respectively.
Sanwo-Olu also congratulated Chiamaka Nnadozie who bagged the 2023 Confederation of African Football Women’s Goalkeeper.
The governor gave his felicitation in a post on his official Twitter handle on Tuesday.
He wrote, “It brings me great joy as a football fan and Nigerian to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our superstars at the #CAFAwards2023.
“Super excited for #victorosimhen9, who, after 24 years, marks our return to the top of the male individual awards with the 2023 African Men’s Player of the Year. Witnessing his ascendancy fills me with pride. A remarkable achievement for Nigerian football.
“Six wins and five straight times for our Agba Baller #AsisatOshoala as she secures the 2023 Women’s Player of the Year.
“A big congratulations to #Nadoziechiamaka the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year and also to the Super Falcons for being named 2023 National Team of the Year (Women).
“All of these victories are remarkable testament to our nation’s football prowess, and we will continue to support them.”
Osimhen, in a stiff opposition, defeated Morocco and PSG defender Achraf Hakimi and Egypt and Liverpool forward Mo Salah to clinch Nigeria’s first POTY title in 24 years.
Oshoala, on the other hand, clinched her sixth Women’s Player of The Year award at the CAF Awards 2023.
