Members of the organized labor in Abuja are currently engaged in a spirited protest against the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The protesters, comprising members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other concerned Nigerians, took to the streets with placards and banners, expressing their grievances.
Armed policemen stationed at the entrance of the National Assembly had locked the main gate to prevent the protesters from gaining access to the complex. However, an altercation between the protesters and security agents resulted in the gate being forcefully pulled down by the surging crowd, overpowering the security agents.
Led by NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo, the protesters gathered at the Federal Ministry of Justice, demanding that the Nigerian government address the suffering caused by the fuel subsidy removal and the subsequent rise in fuel prices. They expressed dissatisfaction with what they perceived as unfriendly policies targeting the poor and held placards with inscriptions such as #BringBackOurRefineries, #LetThePoorBreathe, and #ALUTACONTINUA.
As the protest continues, the determined demonstrators are currently making their way toward the second gate of the National Assembly, vowing to bring it down as well.
The situation remains tense as the protesters seek to make their voices heard and demand concrete actions from the government.
