In a tragic incident that has left the residents of Owerri, Imo State’s capital, in shock, a retired Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) named Mr. Sampson Owobo and his wife were shot dead by three unidentified gunmen on Sunday night.
The horrifying incident occurred around 8 pm in close proximity to the Chisco Transport company office, adjacent to the Owerri Area Police Command office and the Owerri Urban Police Divisional headquarters on Egbu Road. The incident prompted a state of confusion among the local residents and business owners in the vicinity.
Witnesses to the crime reported that the armed assailants, who were in a vehicle, were attempting to rob the couple. Mr. and Mrs. Owobo were proprietors of a Point of Sale (POS) business and were in possession of a bag containing an undisclosed amount of money. When their attempt to seize the bag failed, the assailants resorted to firing at close range.
Tragically, the retired ASP, Sampson Owobo, was shot in the forehead, near his eyes, and succumbed to his injuries on the spot. His wife was struck on her left side, near her chest, and despite being rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, by the police, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The eyewitness shared, “The man’s name is Sampson Owobo. He hailed from Edo State. He is a retired police officer, having retired about five years ago with the rank of ASP. The armed robbers fled the scene, and as of now, they haven’t been apprehended. This crime happened in close proximity to the Owerri Fire Service Police Area Command headquarters and the Owerri Urban Police Divisional headquarters.”
Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the state police, confirmed the tragic incident and revealed that an investigation has been launched with the aim of capturing the suspects. He stated, “The murder of the couple is highly condemnable.
The CP frowns at the killing of the couple and he has immediately ordered an investigation into their killings with the mandate to apprehend the fleeing criminals.”
