Following the military coup against elected President Mohamed Bazoum in Niger, Germany announced the suspension of its development aid and budget support to the country. This decision mirrors the recent actions taken by Paris, which also suspended its aid to Niger in response to the coup.
German Foreign Ministry spokesman Sebastian Fischer stated that all direct support payments to the government of Niger have been suspended. Additionally, bilateral cooperation for development has been halted as well, according to Katharina Koufen, spokesperson for the Ministry of Development.
The German government condemned the coup and expressed concern about the evolving situation in Niger. They emphasized the need for a return to democratic order and pledged to continue efforts within the international community to address the crisis.
As the situation remains uncertain, Germany is closely monitoring the developments in Niger and is prepared to take further measures depending on the unfolding events. However, there are currently no plans for the evacuation of German nationals from Niger, as the situation does not appear to pose an immediate threat to them.
In Niger, around a hundred German soldiers are stationed, and there is a critical Bundeswehr air base in the capital, Niamey, which is essential for military operations, including the withdrawal of the German army from neighboring Mali.
As the international community responds to the coup and its implications, Germany’s suspension of development aid underscores the seriousness of the situation and reflects the global concern about preserving democratic institutions and stability in Niger.
