In a surprising turn of events, Justice Hamza Muazu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, has ruled that the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, be remanded in Kuje prison pending the determination of his request for bail. This decision, made on November 17, 2023, has ignited significant attention and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Emefiele’s detention.
Emefiele is scheduled to remain in Kuje prison until November 22, when the court is set to deliver a ruling on his bail motion. The decision to detain the ex-CBN governor follows his lead counsel, Mathew Burkaa SAN, presenting an application for bail—a move that was vigorously opposed by Rotimi Oyedepo on behalf of the Federal Government.
During the court session, there was a clash of legal arguments as both parties presented their case for and against the bail application. Justice Muazu, after carefully considering the arguments, deemed it necessary to delay delivering a bench ruling. The reason cited was the complexity of the legal landscape and the numerous authorities referenced by the opposing sides.
Justice Muazu expressed the need for additional time to thoroughly study the legal precedents and examine the exhibits provided by Emefiele’s legal team in support of the bail request. This cautious approach aims to ensure a fair and well-informed decision regarding the former CBN governor’s bail status.
As of the latest report, officials from the Kuje prison authority have been contacted to arrange transportation to convey Emefiele to the prison facility. This development marks a significant chapter in the legal proceedings surrounding Emefiele, with the public eagerly awaiting the court’s decision on his bail come November 22, 2023.
