Dayo Awoniyi :
Federal Government on Monday said that all Nigeria Electricity Supply companies that perform below expectations will lose not less than fifty per cent of their operating expenditures.
This announcement was made during the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission at the first NESI Stakeholders meeting that was held in 2024 in Lagos. It was further stated that the performance of Discos shall be evaluated on a regular basis.
Nigeria has eleven power distribution companies that supply electricity to more than twelve million electricity subscribers in Nigeria.
Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Vice Chairman, Musiliu Useni, appealed to Discos to improve their service delivery or will be punished. “NERC will look at the performance on a case by case basis. Sanctions and actions will not be the same. Ensure that you (Discos) improve your efficiency.
” If your efficiency is at the level expected, you will get your full OPEX(operating expenditure). If you don’t perform, you will only get fifty 50 per cent of your admin OPEX. ”
Useni expressed worry over the spate of illegal construction and building of houses under transmission lines and further warned Discos not to give power to such buildings.
Electricity in Nigeria is no doubt epileptic and bodies responsible for it supply need reawakening to their responsibilities.
