The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has been arraigned before the Federal High Court, Lagos on two counts of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
The embattled apex bank’s chief arrived at the Court on Tuesday morning in a white Hilux vehicle escorted by personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS).
At the Court sitting, he pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against him.
After the plea, his counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), told the Court that his client had been in detention for weeks.
He also told Justice Nicholas Oweibo that the application for bail had been filed and served on the prosecution.
It would be recalled that Emefiele was arrested by DSS on June 10, 2023, for ‘some investigative reasons’, following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
After weeks of being detained, an Abuja High Court on July 13, 2023, issued DSS a one-week ultimatum to charge Emefiele to Court or release him.
