Facing opposition from various quarters, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Heads of State and Government have made the bold decision to deploy a standby force to reinstate constitutional order in Niger Republic.
The ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF), comprising military, police, and civilian components, aligns with the United Nations Charter’s provisions for regional peace and security arrangements.
As the situation escalates, ECOWAS called on international partners, including the United Nations, to back their efforts in swiftly restoring stability in Niger.
However, reports indicate that the junta in Niger has threatened to harm deposed President Mohamed Bazoum if ECOWAS countries resort to military intervention.
This ECOWAS decision came shortly after the military junta formed a new government, naming 21 cabinet ministers, including some of the coup leaders.
While ECOWAS Chairman and Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, initially advocated for diplomatic dialogue, the Heads of State and Government ultimately resolved to deploy troops to restore constitutional government in Niger Republic.
The summit’s resolutions included maintaining diplomatic measures but enforcing strict measures, such as border closures, travel bans, and asset freezes for parties hindering the peaceful resolution of the crisis.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern about the living conditions and safety of detained President Mohamed Bazoum and his family, urging their immediate release.
Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Afenifere, a Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, both cautioned against military intervention, advocating for peaceful dialogue and respecting democratic processes.
With tensions escalating and ECOWAS taking a stand, the future of Niger’s political landscape remains uncertain, while regional diplomatic efforts continue in earnest.
