Following the report of not less than four defilement cases within a week in Ogun State, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Alamatu Mustapha, has admonished parents to embrace the authoritative and supporting style of parenting.
The most recent case of defilement occurred at Agbowa Road, Aiyepe Ijebu. The parent of the 11-year-old victim reported at Odogbolu Division that a 20-year-old suspect, identified as Lawal Hammed, had unlawfully carnal knowledge of the girl inside his bathroom.
He further narrated that the suspect has been harassing his daughter sexually for a long time, but he did not mention what steps he took to scare the suspect off his daughter.
The law of defilement in Nigeria is trite, Section 218 of the Criminal Code Act. The section states that Any person who has unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 13 years is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life, according to the CP.
While the victim has been taken to Odogbolu general hospital for medical examination, emotional therapy, and counseling, the suspect will be charged in Court on the strength of material evidence from the forensic examination.
