A Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos has set September 27, 2023, for the arraignment of Seun Kuti, an Afrobeat musician, who is facing charges of assaulting a Police Officer.
The arraignment could not proceed on the scheduled date due to the absence of Chief Magistrate Mrs. Adeola Olatunbosun, who was reportedly indisposed so the Court adjourned the arraignment till September 27.
Seun Kuti was arrested by Officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID) for allegedly assaulting Inspector Mohammed Aminu on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on May 13, 2023.
A viral video showed Kuti shoving and slapping the Inspector, who was in uniform.
The Police had sought his remand on May 16, 2023, pending the completion of their investigation.
At the end of the investigation, the defendant was dragged before the Court for arraignment. But the defendant’s arraignment was stalled after his counsel argued that the Police couldn’t serve as both complainant and prosecutor in the case.
Consequently, the Chief Magistrate conceded to the defense team’s submissions and ordered the police to forward the case file to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.
One of the police lawyers, Mr. O. Cyril, who was in court for the musician’s arraignment, said the DPP had advised that Kuti be prosecuted for assault.
The musician and his lawyers were not present in court, but the registrars fixed September 27, for his arraignment.
