Top national security officials from South Africa, China, Russia, India, and Brazil convened in Johannesburg for the BRICS 13th National Security Advisors Meeting.
Led by Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, the South African Minister In Presidency responsible for the State Security Agency, the representatives discussed their common “BRICS agenda and cooperation on security-related matters,” as well as matters of global security and economic cooperation affecting their regions.
China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, who is set to replace Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang, highlighted the significance of BRICS as an essential platform for emerging markets and developing countries to unite their strengths.
The meeting aimed to align their strategic guidance, discuss major issues concerning national and international security, foster consensus, explore solutions, and make political preparations for the upcoming BRICS Summit.
The Meeting of National Security Advisers and High Representatives on National Security serves as a platform for Brics countries to engage in political and security cooperation.
In addition to the BRICS members, a group of countries known as the “Friends of BRICS” attended the meeting, including Belarus, Burundi, Cuba, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
The “Friends of BRICS” comprises countries that have expressed interest in joining BRICS, along with influential Global South institutions and invitees as per the Chair’s prerogative.
Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni emphasized the need to reinforce cooperation within BRICS and the United Nations’ multilateral system to effectively address shared challenges, such as counter-terrorism, transnational crimes, and cybersecurity.
The gathering serves as a preparatory event ahead of the 15th BRICS Summit scheduled to take place in Johannesburg in August.
As the BRICS countries continue to collaborate and strengthen their ties, they reaffirm their commitment to addressing global issues and fostering cooperation among emerging economies and developing nations.
