Governor of Borno State, Prof Babagana Zulum, expressed skepticism about the efficacy of President Bola Tinubu’s current palliative measures in addressing food insecurity and other challenges.
Speaking at the inauguration of Senator Abubakar Kyari as the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, and Senator Aliyu Abdullahi as the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Zulum emphasized the need for solutions that extend beyond short-term palliatives.
Zulum stated, “It’s evident that palliatives alone won’t resolve our issues. Short-term measures won’t suffice; we must focus on medium and long-term solutions that tackle Nigeria’s food and security concerns.
This calls for investments in commercial agriculture, modern farming techniques, irrigation, green and emerging technologies, as well as efficient water harvesting.”
He further emphasized the urgency of these measures due to the nation’s rapidly expanding population and the concurrent decline in food supplies.
Zulum expressed his expectation that the newly-appointed ministers, along with industry experts, would collaborate to reinvigorate the nation’s agricultural sector.
Governor Zulum also highlighted Nigeria’s abundant arable land and water resources, presenting a favorable foundation for achieving food security in terms of both quantity and quality.
His remarks underscore the importance of a strategic and sustainable approach to address the pressing challenges of food availability and overall security.
