Arsenal has secured the signing of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya on a season-long loan, introducing an intriguing competition for the starting goalkeeper position alongside Aaron Ramsdale.
The 27-year-old Spanish international was a standout player for Brentford in the Premier League last season, featuring in all 38 games and receiving praise for his performances. He had previously been linked with a permanent £30 million transfer to Arsenal, but the loan deal reportedly cost the club around £3 million.
The loan agreement includes an option for Arsenal to make Raya’s signing permanent for £27 million at the end of the season.
Edu, Arsenal’s Sporting Director, welcomed Raya, highlighting his consistent high-level performance with Brentford in the Premier League. The addition of Raya is expected to enhance the squad’s quality and depth for various competitions.
Despite joining Arsenal on loan, Raya has also extended his contract with Brentford by two years, with the possibility of an additional 12-month extension.
Ramsdale, who arrived from Sheffield United in 2021, has been a reliable presence in goal for Arsenal. However, the signing of Raya is set to intensify the competition for the starting goalkeeper position, adding more depth to the team.
Raya’s loan deal is structured to provide Arsenal with the option of converting it into a permanent transfer in the future. The deal was structured in this manner to facilitate a swift agreement between both clubs while allowing for a potential permanent transfer at a later date.
