A crackdown on organized crime across the country has led to the arrest of a myriad of suspects and the recovery of firearms.
Under the leadership of the acting Inspector General of Police, Ag. IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, who was appointed on June 19, 2023, a total of 9180 suspects have been arrested for various offenses to date.
Giving a breakdown of the achievements at a meeting with Commissioners of Police and above at the Nigeria Police Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday, Ag. IGP Egbetokun said 986 suspects were arrested for armed robbery, 377 for kidnapping and banditry, 848 for homicide, 297 for unlawful possession of firearms, 517 for rape and other sexual offenses, 874 for cultism and 5281 for other offenses.
Also, 520 firearms, 4,043 ammunition, and 264 stolen vehicles were recovered while 363 kidnapped victims were rescued.
“Notwithstanding this achievement, there are still prevailing threats across the country. We have carried out several anti-banditry operations in the northeast and north-central regions while efforts are being intensified to minimize incidents of herder/ farmers clashes through actionable intelligence from the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) and communal engagements towards tackling the existing challenges of insurgency, kidnapping and banditry in States of the federation,” he stated.
In the same vein, as the Federal Government put plans in place to distribute palliatives to the public in the face of the present economic realities, the Ag. IGP has directed all State Commands Commissioners of Police to emplace round-the-clock security around government warehouses and other storage facilities to avoid incidents of looting.
