Not less than 24 persons are confirmed dead, while several others are missing following a boat mishap that occurred in the Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State on Sunday.
According to the Chairman of Mokwa Local Government, Jibrim Muregi, the actual number of travellers cannot be ascertained at the moment, but 24 dead bodies of passengers from Gbajibo, Ekwa and Yankeiade communities were recovered.
Meanwhile, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, said the Police received information from Gbajibo area of Mokwa that a wooden boat conveying some passengers on board from Gbajibo water side heading to Tungan-Mango for farming activities capsized.
A team consisting of DPO Mokwa Division, Marine Police and local divers and recovered the bodies of thirteen persons.
A rescue mission is ongoing.
