Four Killed As Gunmen Attack US Consulate Convoy In Anambra

Two staff of the US Consulate and two Officers attached to the Police Mobile Force lost their lives in an attack on Tuesday.

The convoy of staff of the US Consulate came under heavy attack by gunmen at about 3:30 pm along Atani, Osamale road in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The assailants, suspected to be members of the Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra  (IPOB) and Eastern security network (ESN), set the bodies of those shot dead ablaze and their vehicles. They also abducted two Police operatives and the driver of the second vehicle.

Confirming the incident, the State Police Spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Joint Security Forces have embarked on a rescue/recovery operation and no US citizen was hurt.

“The hoodlums murdered two of the Police Mobile Force PMF operatives and two staff of the Consulate and set their bodies ablaze and their vehicles. Also, the arsonists/murderers, suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN), on sighting the responding joint security forces abducted two Police operatives, the driver of the second vehicle and took to their heels. No US citizen was in the convoy,” he stated.

While expressing the Command’s regret over the convoy’s entry into the State without recourse to the police or any other security agency in the area, he assured that the battle against the insurgents in the State is focused and will remain sustained security stability is fully restored.

In reaction to the incident, the US National Security Council Spokesperson, John Kirby, said, “I just got informed about a whole lot before coming out here to talk to you all. Just looks like a US convoy vehicle was attacked.

“What I can tell you is that no US citizens were involved, and therefore there were no US citizens hurt. But we are aware of some casualties perhaps, even some killed. I don’t want to get too far ahead of where we are right now; the State Department is looking into this,” he said.
