Aisha Buhari Commissions POWA National Secretariat, Youth & Skills Acquisition Centre

Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari, on Wednesday, commissioned the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) National Secretariat, Aso Drive, and the Youth and Skills Acquisition Center, Dei-Dei Barracks, Abuja, as part of the initiatives to improve the welfare of the families of Police Officers.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Buhari said POWA has positioned itself as a vehicle for uncommon transformation drive and character revive across Police communities, noting that its President, Hajara Usman Baba-Alkali, has initiated future-assured policies for refurbishing the Maryam MD Abubakar Youth and Skilles Acquisition Center.

She tasked POWA President to put the necessary facilities and structure needed to maintain the project.

In her address, Hajara Usman Baba-Alkali, who expressed gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR, for his timely intervention, asserted that before it was refurbished the Center was used as a school for children of Police Officers living in the barracks.

Following the construction of a new school for the children, the abandoned building was remodeled to provide hands-on skills for the Police community.

The building has a center for adult learning, a fashion institute with 12 sewing machines, an ICT center, a sickbay, and an event center of 100 sitting capacity, among others.

IGP Usman Alkali Baba, the President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs. Victoria Irabor; the President of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), Mrs. Salamatu Yahaya, President of the Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA), Nana Aisha Gambo; the President of the Nigerian Airforce Officers’ Wives Association (NAFOWA), Mrs. Elizabeth Olubunmi Amao, among others, graced the occasion.
