Usifo Ataga: Court Dismisses Claim That Chidinma Was Forced To Sign Confessional Statement
Justice Yetunde Adesanya of an Ikeja High Court has held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that Chidinma Ojukwu made her confessional statements willingly and without duress.
Chidinma Ojukwu, who is the prime suspect in the murder of Super TV CEO, Usifo Ataga, had told the Court that she was slapped and forced by the Police to sign a statement admitting to the murder.
While ruling on a trial within trial to determine the voluntariness of the statements on Thursday, the Judge maintained that the videos didn’t show any form of intimidation towards the defendant.
“The videos tendered in court did not display any intimidation towards the defendant while she was writing her statements.
“The voice of the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) was clear and audible. It did not show any form of intimidation.”
Therefore, she admitted the two statements in evidence and marked them as exhibits.
She also adjourned the case until May 30 for the continuation of trial.
Chidinma and one Adedapo Quadri are facing an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy, murder, stabbing, forgery, making of bank statements, and stealing.
