Lagos CP Removes DPO Mushin Over Inaction

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Idowu Owohunwa, has removed the Divisional Police Officer, Mushin, after an investigation into a case of assault revealed that some Officers attached to the Division displayed professional misconduct.

In a video, a woman, identified as James Omolara, alleged that a businessman in Ladipo Market, where she works, ordered boys to slap her after she refused his sexual advances. She further stated that when she stood up for herself, the man, whom she called Bebex, then called some Policemen to defend him.

Surprisingly in a second video, the woman claimed that she misunderstood his approach and made the video because she was angry.

Following the rebuttal, there were speculations that she made the second video out of duress, so the Lagos State Domestic & Sexual Violence Response Agency got involved, and the CP also directed the Area Commander to immediately take over the case from the Division and do a thorough review of the entire investigation.

CP Idowu interviewed all the stakeholders involved- including Omolara and family, Bebex and his employees, and lawyers representing both sides at the Command Headquarters on Tuesday.

In a series of tweets, the State Police Spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, noted that the CP established that there is a case to answer and directed that the matter be charged to Court immediately.

“It is elating and morale-boosting that we now have a willing complainant and as a result, a tenable case to present in Court.

“CP Idowu Owohunwa, having carefully listened to all parties, has established that there are indeed cases to answer and has therefore directed that the matter be charged to Court immediately.

“The CP also identified professional misconduct on the part of some of the Police Officers involved in the case. For this, the Command Provost has been directed to immediately commence disciplinary action against the Officers concerned.

“And finally, the DPO Mushin, in whose Division all the Officers aforementioned are serving, has been relieved of his posting with immediate effect.”
