A final year student of the Department of Civil Engineering, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Okoli Chizoputam, has been beaten to death by his fellow students on campus.

The student was alleged to have stolen a phone from the Obafemi Awolowo Hall of Residence and a crowd pounced on him.

According to the students’ union, the victim was said to have been declared “Brought in Dead (BOD)” at the Emergency Medical Department of the University’s Teaching Hospital.

The management has condemned the unfortunate incident, setting up a committee to unravel the circumstances that led to his death.

In a statement, the University’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, noted that a preliminary investigation revealed that the student died of a mob action on the allegation that he stole a phone.

“The action of the mob, being a violation of the law of the country and of the University regulations, has been reported  to the police who have commenced investigation.

“The University administration hereby commiserates with the parents of the deceased, staff and students, and prays that God will grant us the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

“Students are strongly admonished to desist from taking laws into their own hands and to report any criminal activities to the University authorities for immediate actions.”
