Gunmen Kill At Least 46 Locals In Benue
Gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen militia, unleashed terror in Umuogidi community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, killing no less than 46 persons- including a Policeman.
The attack, which happened on Wednesday evening, comes barely 24 hours after residents of the community buried three persons killed by herdsmen.
The Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Council, Hon. Bako Ejeh, whose biological son, brother-in-law, and nephew were killed, fingered herdsmen as those responsible for attacking local communities over the last month.
The Special Adviser to Governor Samuel Ortom on Security Matters, Lt. Col. Paul Hemba (rtd), also confirmed the attack stating that although 46 bodies were recovered, the figure could rise higher as some members of the community are missing.
“I can confirm to you that there was an attack in Umogidi and as of this morning, the causality figure from those who were seen physically from what I was told were 46 so far and other people are still missing.”
Also condemning the unfortunate killings, the State Governor-Elect, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, called on security agencies to conduct surveillance to identify the perpetrators behind the killings and nip it in the bud for peace to be restored in the communities.
