Three suspected members of the deadly cult group known as Aiye which has been unleashing terror on different parts of Ogun State in recent times, have been arrested.
The suspects named Jonathan Oshinalu, Kola Bolugbe, and Jimoh Aliu a.k.a Alaayan, were arrested on Monday.
According to the State Police Spokesperson, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, SWAT operatives had received intelligence that a notorious cult leader, simply known as Ben, who had been involved in several cult clashes leading to the death of not less than five persons, was holding a nocturnal meeting with his group at Ogun radio, Mile 2 area of Lafenwa, Abeokuta, to launch another attack in some parts of the metropolis.
The SWAT team, in conjunction with men of Lafenwa and Ilupeju Divisions, moved to the location and engaged the hoodlums in a gunbattle that lasted for about 30 minutes.
“On sighting the Policemen, Ben and his deadly group engaged them in a gun battle which lasted for about 30 minutes. At the end of the encounter, Ben escaped with bullet wounds while three were apprehended.
“The hoodlums during the attack destroyed the patrol vehicle of Lafenwa Division before they were subdued by the superior firepower of the Police,” he said.
An unregistered Lexus 330 car used for their operations was recovered.
Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has directed a massive manhunt for the escaped gang leader and other members of his group, while the arrested cult members would be charged to Court after investigation.
